About

Future Earth Australia is a national initiative established by the Australian Academy of Science to catalyse, collaborate, and connect research and practice for sustainability transitions that are grounded in people and place. A national node in the global Future Earth network, Future Earth Australia (FEA) provides Australian researchers, governments, industry, peak bodies, and civil society an interconnected platform of expertise and creativity to collaborate on global change issues. Transforming our understanding and application of sustainability is imperative to address the triple planetary crises of biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change in this critical decade to 2030.

Project Opportunities/Benefits for the Intern

It is an opportunity to work with professional staff at the Academy across multiple teams and gain a deeper understanding of applied science and research impact, and the intersection of science policy and science diplomacy. It is expected the student will learn about the applications of sustainability research, and how inter- and trans-disciplinary work supports that. Science communication skills will be gained or augmented.

Summary:

Future Earth Australia, based at the Australian Academy of Science, seeks an intern to evaluate communications and coordinate policy positions and collaborative links across the Future Earth network. A creative and detail-oriented person is sought to review the Future Earth Australia (FEA) website and messaging consistency and content across its platforms. Communications will focus on FEAs international linkages and domestic research impact through its three national strategies. A report will be developed that can be used in subsequent strategic messaging and content creation.

The intern will also map and coordinate the collaboration potential across its membership. Future Earth Australia members are some of Australia’s top sustainability focused research institutes. This piece will focus on collating the collective work of FEA members, identifying areas and projects for collaboration. The Future Earth network will be scanned for program and awards for collaboration and further action.

The final piece will be to draft or create a framework for a series of policy position papers based on the current and future policy issues relating to the three FEA published strategies: Sustainable Cities and Regions, Sustainable Oceans and Coasts, and Just Adaptation.
