Eligibility and key information

What do I need to achieve to progress into fourth year?

Students must meet the requirements for the first three years of their program and achieve a minimum 70% weighted average mark (WAM). This WAM is calculated from 36 units of courses in disciplines cognate to the Honours specialisation (excluding 1000-level courses) with the highest marks. You must also satisfy any requirements specified in the relevant Honours specialisation (see table below to link to Programs and Courses).

When should I start looking for a supervisor?

As soon as you begin to consider Honours, you should check out the relevant Schools website (as linked in the ‘key information table’ above) and discuss any queries with the Honours Convener.

Students are often advised to approach potential supervisors the semester before beginning a research project. Yet, it is never too early to start learning about what research is being done in your field. You may become fascinated with a topic or type of research that is completely new to you!  Take every opportunity you have to ask academic staff and students about their research. You can talk to your friends who are doing research, your instructors, course demonstrator's and tutors, and graduate students you interact with*.

*If you are pursuing Honours in Psychology you do not need to identify a potential supervisor.  Students will be assigned a supervisor at the beginning of the Honours year.

How do I find a supervisor?

Visit Finding a supervisor for advice. You are also welcome to contact the Honours Convener for guidance.

*If you are pursuing Honours in Psychology you do not need to identify a potential supervisor.  Students will be assigned a supervisor at the beginning of the Honours year.

Procedure to apply for Honours

Step 1 - Submit your application

Current ANU students and alumni should apply for the one-year program which has the same degree name as your current program or graduation certificate. If you are a Bachelor of Arts student, visit How to apply for College of Arts and Social Sciences honours. Students studying outside of ANU apply for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in most instances. If you are unsure which program to apply for please contact us.

To apply, choose your course below, and click the Apply button in the top-right corner:

In the portal you will be prompted to nominate the Honours Specialisation which you are applying for, this information is essential.

Some disciplines also require a supplementary form which should be uploaded to the portal when you go to submit your application. If the application deadline is approaching you can submit your application without the relevant supplementary form but please note your application will not progress until your supplementary form is received. Supplementary forms can be uploaded to the portal after you have submitted your application as well.

Honours Specialisations which require a supplementary form include:

Other Honours Specialisations do not require a supplementary form.

We encourage you to submit your application as early as possible and prior to the deadlines below:

Semester 1 intake

  • Psychology Honours – 31 October
  • All other Honours Specialisations – 15 December

Semester 2 intake

  • All Honours Specialisations – 31 May

Late applications

Applications received for Psychology Honours after the closing date will not be considered. For all other Honours Specialisations, applications received after the closing date will be considered at the discretion of the Honours Convener. Applicants will incur a $150 late application fee.  Please contact us for further information.

Academic documents

Current ANU students or alumni do not need to upload academic documents as we have access to the information required already and can move to step 2. Students studying outside of the ANU do need to upload official academic documents as detailed below:

Have you already completed your Bachelor Degree?

When you apply, you will need to upload clear, colour copies of your academic transcripts and graduation certificates. There is no need to certify your documents, but they must be colour scans of the original copies without any alteration of any kind. ANU independently verifies the authenticity of your qualifications.

Are you still completing your Bachelor Degree?

If you are in your final year of your Bachelor degree you can still apply, but you must advise ANU of your expected graduation date in your application. You will need to provide a clear, colour copy of your most recent academic transcript for assessment. If you are successful, you will be asked to provide copies of your final transcript and graduation certificate before you may receive a full offer.

Step 2 - Assessment by the Honours Convener

Your application will be sent to the Honours Convener to assess if you are on track or have met the admission requirements specific to your nominated Honours Specialisation as outlined on Programs and Courses. The Honours Convener will also confirm your supervisory arrangements.

*If you are pursuing Honours in Psychology you do not need to identify a potential supervisor. Students will be assigned a supervisor at the beginning of the Honours year.

Step 3 - Notification of outcome

The ANU Admissions Office will contact all successful and unsuccessful applicants by email. When you apply, please ensure you supply an active email address. Check your email regularly so you don't miss any correspondence.

You can expect to receive notification of the outcome of your application by late December or July for mid-year intake (after your final results are available).  If you would like an update about the progress of your application or have not received an outcome please contact us.

Step 4 - Accept your offer

If your application is successful, you will receive an offer.  Please read your offer letter carefully to see if there are any conditions that you need to meet.

Once you receive an offer it is very important that you accept it to ensure your place at ANU is reserved.  Please follow the instructions included in your offer letter to accept and pay your deposit (payment of a deposit is applicable to international applicants only) prior to the acceptance deadline.  For further information about the acceptance process please visit the links below:

Students can accept a conditional offer prior to satisfying the conditions of said offer.
