How to navigate and understand changes to College of Science programs

The ANU College of Science undertakes comprehensive reviews of all undergraduate and postgraduate programs regularly. This ensures all graduates effectively articulate and translate the capabilities they developed during their degree.

Sometimes program reviews lead to changes that may affect your program. Most changes fall under the following categories:

  1. Course changes including adding new courses, updating course names and removing courses are no longer offered.
  2. Structural changes. Sometimes it is necessary to adjust degrees to be compliant with University or Legislative requirements, keep up to date with developments in the discipline or industry, or to ensure our degrees continue to attract, retain and create high quality graduates.

What does this mean for students?

I am an existing ANU student and planning to stay in, and graduate, from my current degree.

You should be able to continue to follow the degree rules from the year of your commencement.  Changes that significantly impact the balance of your degree will be communicated to you by the College Student Services Team by email and on this website, with the details of how to get academic advice. This kind of change might comprise the recoding of a compulsory course or the disestablishment of one or more compulsory courses listed in the study requirements of your degree.

I am an existing student but plan to transfer degrees, or I have recently accepted a degree transfer into a degree that has changed structure.

You will be expected to follow the rules that apply from the year of the degree transfer. If you are planning to transfer degrees, please seek academic advice from the College of Science Sub Deans so you can make sure your study plans are correct and you are getting the proper amount of credit for courses already completed.

I am new to the ANU and haven’t started my degree yet.

Welcome to the ANU Community! All new students are must follow the rules that apply from the year of admission to your degree. If you need help understanding your degree, please contact the College Student Services Team.

Where to find program rules

Program rules for each year are published in the official online handbook for the ANU: the Programs and Courses catalogue. To check the specific rules for your year of commencement please select the appropriate year from the drop-down menu in P&C (illustration below).
