Summary of the changes to undergraduate programs from 2026

All students should follow the degree rules from the year of commencement in the degree, this also applies to commencement in a degree after an internal transfer.

Program rules for each year are published in the official online handbook for the ANU: the Programs and Courses catalogue. To check the specific rules for your year of commencement please select the appropriate year from the drop-down menu in PC.

A summary of the key changes to all undergraduate programs within the College of Science and Medicine to take effect from 2026 is below.

Bachelor of Science (BSC)

This course is part of a requirement in the majors offered by the Research School of Biology.

  1. Advice for the 1000-level foundational BIOL courses:

If you were planning/were required to complete both BIOL1003 and BIOL1004:

  • If you have completed BIOL1003 but not BIOL1004: enrol in BIOL1020 in Sem 1 2026
  • If you have completed BIOL1004 but not BIOL1003: enrol in BIOL1030 in Sem 2 2026 

If you were planning/were required to complete BIOL1003, BIOL1004 and BIOL1009:

  • If you have completed BIOL1004 but not BIOL1003 nor BIOL1009: take either BIOL1020 in Sem 1, or take BIOL1030 in Sem 2 . You also have the option of enrolling in both BIOL1020 and BIOL1030.
  • If you have completed BIOL1004 and BIOL1009, but not BIOL1003: it is recommended you enrol in BIOL1020 in Sem 1 2026 
  • If you have completed BIOL1003 and BIOL1004, but not BIOL1009: it is recommended you enrol in BIOL1030 in Sem 2 2026

  1. Advice for the new compulsory BIOL2151 requirement:
  • If you are starting to enrol in 2000 level BIOL courses in your BBIOT degree, you must enrol in BIOL2151 in Semester 1 before you can enrol in BIOL3161 in a subsequent year.
  • If you have are starting to enrol in 3000 level BIOL courses in your BBIOT degree, are not expecting to complete your degree in 2026, and have space in your study plan to complete BIOL2151, you should enrol in BIOL2151 in Sem 1 this year so that you can enrol in BIOL3161 in Sem 1 next year.

  • If you are starting to enrol in 3000 level BIOL courses in your BBIOT degree and are expecting to complete your degree in 2026 (mid year or end of year) you will to seek academic advice. Please contact students.cos@anu.edu.au

  • The list of compulsory courses has substantially changed and now also includes 6 x 1000 level courses.
  • Only one of HLTH2001 and HLTH2002 is required.
  • Themed lists of electives have been adjusted and the number of themes reduced.
  • The pre-med pathway has been absorbed into the list of compulsory courses.
  • MEDN2001 last delivery in 2026, to be replaced with new MEDN courses from 2027.
