The ACT Health Directorate (AHD) is responsible for strategic direction and leadership of the ACT health system. AHD provides a strong policy and population health capability based on a foundation of world-leading health and medical research.
Population Health Division contributes to the directorate’s vision of a healthier Canberra by delivering evidenced-based population health programs, driving transformational change to improve long term health outcomes and protecting public health through education, advice and regulatory functions. Our goal is to reduce risks associated with population health, prevent illness and improve the health and wellbeing of the Canberra community.
The Health Promotion Section initiates and manages programs and initiatives that aim to improve the health and wellbeing of the ACT population. These initiatives are delivered in partnership with various stakeholders including schools, businesses, sporting clubs, community organisations and other government agencies. Health Promotion activities seek to influence the social and environmental conditions that impact on population and individual health. Summary:
This project will carry out a literature review (peer reviewed and jurisdictional reports) to identify likely effects of climate change on physical activity in the ACT and how government Health Promotion activities might respond to these challenges. Some stakeholder interviews may form part of this project. Health Promotion creates the conditions for, and promotes, physical activity among the public in order to reduce the risk factors for a range of chronic conditions. Climate change, including increase in heat and drought, may affect the type of physical activities accessible to members of the public.
