AirborneLogic is researching early signals of water stress and disease (particularly Eutypa) in vines using hyperspectral imaging sensors mounted on drones. The intern will be researching the ability to identify specific reflectance bands indicative of these problems. Using multiple plot trials and field (airborne) data capture the researcher will use the data captured within a range of spatial software packages (under the guidance of our internal PhD expert) to identify signals in the non-visual (and potentially visual) light spectrum to assist early identification of problems.

SKILLS WISH LIST

  • Agriculture or horticulture (farming) knowledge would be useful but not mandatory.
  • Background in viticulture (winegrowing) would be desirable.
  • Knowledge of programming and computing languages (including Python).
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills is a must.
  • Familiarity of spatial and imagery processing, remote sensing and software.
  • Comfortable in working alone with limited supervision.

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

This research will enable a clear business case for management intervention at the farm level enabling:

  • faster response to water and disease problems;
  • more cost effective (in money and time) management of these problems;
  • sustainability outcomes for farmers – i.e. soil and water conservation, less use of chemicals.
