ANTIMICROBIAL FLOORING

Allied Finishes serves the food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries in Australia. Their primary focus is on providing flooring solutions in manufacturing facilities that enable food health and WHS compliance.

But they want to do more than just help their clients with compliance – they want to improve the floor system offerings so that their solutions help in the ongoing battle against unwanted microbiological activity in food/ beverage and pharmaceutical facilities.

They envisage two broad stages to the research:

  1. Refinement of the existing preferred coating systems for heavy duty flooring in our target sectors using open market ‘additives’ to achieve specific improvements (eg deterrence of microbial growth and transmission, improvement in ease of cleaning through low dirt retention modifiers etc)
  2. Identification of further specific improvements that will help the identified sectors, followed by development and commercialisation on an ongoing basis (i.e. continuous improvement)

SKILLS WISH LIST

If you’re a PhD student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:

  • Identification of the ‘status quo’, and critical thinking on how to improve this
  • Application of microbiology and chemistry principles
  • Ability to develop practical solutions
