The Australian Academy of Science is Australia’s most eminent scientific body. The Academy was established by Royal Charter in 1954 and has a Fellowship of over 500 leading Australian scientists each elected for their outstanding contributions to the scientific disciplines. The Academy champions, celebrates and supports excellence in Australian science, promotes international scientific engagement, builds public awareness and understanding of science and provides independent, authoritative and influential scientific advice.

The Academy is headquartered in Canberra at the iconic Shine Dome and Ian Potter House, and has a secretariat of approximately 60 staff who support Fellows in their efforts to shape the future of Australian science.

An opportunity exists for a high-achieving undergraduate or postgraduate student from ANU to undertake a policy-oriented internship at the Academy under the guidance of experienced science policy professionals.

Project

In 2019, the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) will mark its 100th anniversary. IUPAC is the world authority on chemical nomenclature, terminology (including the naming of new elements in the periodic table), standardized methods for measurement, atomic weights and many other critically-evaluated data.  It develops and maintains Recommendations that create a common language for the global chemistry community.

Concurrently, 2019 will be the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements and has therefore been proclaimed the "International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019)" by the United Nations General Assembly and UNESCO.

Guided by the National Committee for Chemistry, the Australian Academy of Science has represented Australian science at IUPAC since 1954 as the national adhering organisation. In celebration of IYPT2019 and IUPAC100, the Academy will be organising several activities throughout the year, including a digital art competition for school and university students.

The competition will be run across Australia and seeks to engage schools and individuals to highlight the importance of chemistry and the periodic table across all facets of modern society. A Working Group, convened by the Chair of the National Committee for Chemistry, will provide guidance on the planning and execution of the competition. The competition is expected to run over Term 2, 2019. Details are currently being developed and expected to be finalised in early 2019.

The Academy is seeking an intern to assist in running the IYPT/IUPAC100 Digital Art Competition. Key responsibilities include:

• Monitoring and managing (web-based) competition submissions.
• Responding to enquiries and liaising with stakeholders, including teachers, parents, members of the Working Group, National Committee for Chemistry, and other Academy teams, as required.
• Where required, working with Academy staff and stakeholders to assist in promotion of the competition.
• As required, assisting in finalisation of the competition planning.
