About
GIWL (pronounced "jewel") was chaired and founded by Julia Gillard - the only woman to have served as Prime Minister of Australia - in 2018. We bring together rigorous research, practice and advocacy to better understand and address the causes of workplace gender inequality and the lack of gender diversity in leadership positions across sectors and countries.
GIWL aims to overcome a disconnect between much of the current activity in the diversity and inclusion world, and what research evidence shows is truly effective. We seek to bridge the gap between those who generate evidence, and those who wish to use it, and to amplify existing effective practices and solutions being applied in different countries across the globe. The goal is to break down silos between sectors, nations and approaches and create a community of people focused on advancing gender equality in the workplace and beyond.
GIWL has three main areas of focus:
• Research - drawing together existing findings and undertaking new studies
• Advocacy and engagement - bringing together experts and stakeholders from across the world
• Practice - using research to deliver evidence based training and teaching

Summary:
This project focuses on exploring gender inequality in rapidly evolving scientific areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), space exploration, and climate action. The research aims to develop a comprehensive framework to assist government institutions in balancing competing priorities within these emerging fields. By investigating how gender inequalities manifest and operate in these frontier scientific institutions, the project seeks to identify gendered impacts on representation, funding, and the creation of gender-responsive policies.
Key Questions:
1. How does gender inequality manifest in new institutions related to AI, space, and climate action?
2. How effective are these institutions and policies in addressing existing and emerging gender inequalities?
3. What implications do these findings have on future policy trajectories and institutional frameworks, particularly in terms of promoting gender equality during crises?
The intern will contribute to a comparative case study across the three scientific contexts of AI, space, and climate action in Australia. The project aims to provide actionable insights for developing new policies and tools to enhance gender equality in these critical scientific areas.
