Established in Sydney in 1984, SESL has expanded into QLD (2013), VIC (2014), and the ACT (2015), with a clear company objective to provide accurate and timely sampling, analysis and consulting services. SESL undertakes a variety of projects involving all aspect of environment, soil and waste materials for both public, private and government sectors. Our team of experienced consultants are supported by our NATA accredited laboratory located in Sydney. SESL’s other accreditations include ISO9001:2008, ISO14001:2015 and AS/NZS4801:2001.
SESL is seeking motivated, high-achieving 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates who are interested in environmental science, contaminated land management, and soil science. Specific skills required for these internships include background knowledge on environmental science, with preference for contaminated lands studies and/or soil science for the urban landscape industry. Students must be willing to work on site (site investigations and sampling work), and be able to undertake assigned tasks with supervision. Projects typically require a substantial amount of administrative tasks, therefore adequate/proficient computer skills are required (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel etc). A valid driver’s license is preferable.
Please note that the internships for Semester 1, 2019 will be conducted through the SESL head office in Sydney – 16 Chilvers Road, Thornleigh.
The projects are likely to vary during the year and therefore during the period of internship. Types of projects include the following:
- Contaminated land assessment, which may include detailed desktop study of the site, soil investigation on site, and management of contaminated sites to allow for proposed development, if contamination identified.
- Detailed soil survey, to assist with development/pre-development site. This includes detailed desktop study, detailed soil investigation, study of soil characteristics to determine best landscape design options to maximise soil as resource as well as prescribe soil treatment programs for onsite development. This may include developing tender documents for tender submission, and validation during post construction. At SESL, we specialise in consolidated investigation for contamination and soil science, therefore these projects are expected.
- Waste assessment to determine management strategies and potential reuse options. This may include a variety of excavated materials and organic waste. At SESL, we specialise in organic waste recycling, so routine organic waste assessment is expected.
- Water assessment, which may include groundwater and surface water assessment, for contamination, monitoring and in some case potable uses.
- Salinity and acid sulfate soil assessment for pre-development sites.
- Occasional soil diagnostics assessment on failed landscape.
- Soil assessment for determining on site sewage management system.
